  • Powder for Solution

Therapeutic Class: Antibiotic

Uses For daptomycin

Daptomycin injection is used to treat complicated skin and skin structure infections (cSSSI). It is also used to treat infections in the bloodstream, including right-sided infective endocarditis.

Daptomycin belongs to the class of medicines known as antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. However, daptomycin will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections.

daptomycin is available only with your doctor's prescription.

Before Using daptomycin

In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. For daptomycin, the following should be considered:

Allergies

Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to daptomycin or any other medicines. Also tell your health care professional if you have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. For non-prescription products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.

Pediatric

Appropriate studies have not been performed on the relationship of age to the effects of daptomycin injection in the pediatric population. Safety and efficacy have not been established.

Geriatric

Appropriate studies performed to date have not demonstrated geriatric-specific problems that would limit the usefulness of daptomycin injection in the elderly. However, elderly patients are more likely to have increased unwanted side effects, which may require caution in patients receiving daptomycin injection.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy CategoryExplanation
All TrimestersBAnimal studies have revealed no evidence of harm to the fetus, however, there are no adequate studies in pregnant women OR animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus.

Breast Feeding

There are no adequate studies in women for determining infant risk when using this medication during breastfeeding. Weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks before taking this medication while breastfeeding.

Interactions with Medicines

Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. When you are receiving daptomycin, it is especially important that your healthcare professional know if you are taking any of the medicines listed below. The following interactions have been selected on the basis of their potential significance and are not necessarily all-inclusive.

Using daptomycin with any of the following medicines is usually not recommended, but may be required in some cases. If both medicines are prescribed together, your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both of the medicines.

  • Atorvastatin

  • Fluvastatin

  • Lovastatin

  • Pravastatin

  • Rosuvastatin

  • Simvastatin

Interactions with Food/Tobacco/Alcohol

Certain medicines should not be used at or around the time of eating food or eating certain types of food since interactions may occur. Using alcohol or tobacco with certain medicines may also cause interactions to occur. Discuss with your healthcare professional the use of your medicine with food, alcohol, or tobacco.

Other Medical Problems

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of daptomycin. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:

  • Diarrhea or

  • Muscle problems or

  • Nerve problems (e.g., neuropathy)—Use with caution. May make these conditions worse.

  • Kidney disease—Use with caution. The effects may be increased because of slower removal of the medicine from the body.

  • Staphylococcus infection, persisting or relapsing—Patients with this condition should have repeated blood tests.

Proper Use of daptomycin

A nurse or other trained health professional will give you daptomycin. daptomycin is given through a needle placed in one of your veins. daptomycin is given slowly, so the needle will remain in place for about 30 minutes.

To help clear up your infection completely, keep using daptomycin for the full time of treatment, even if you begin to feel better after a few days. Also, daptomycin works best when there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep the amount constant, you must receive daptomycin on a regular schedule.

Precautions While Using daptomycin

Your doctor will check your progress closely while you are receiving daptomycin. This will allow your doctor to see if the medicine is working properly and to decide if you should continue to receive it.

If your symptoms do not improve within a few days or if they become worse, check with your doctor.

Call your doctor right away if you develop chest pain, dry cough, fever, general feeling of tiredness or weakness, rapid breathing, shortness of breath, skin rash, or wheezing after receiving daptomycin. These maybe symptoms of a serious condition called eosinophilic pneumonia.

Daptomycin injection may cause diarrhea, and in some cases it can be severe. It may occur 2 months or more after you stop receiving daptomycin. Do not take any medicine to treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor. If you have any questions or if mild diarrhea continues or gets worse, check with your doctor.

If you have unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness while receiving daptomycin, check with your doctor right away.

Check with your doctor right away if you are having burning, numbness, tingling, or painful sensations in the arms, hands, legs, or feet after receiving daptomycin. These could be symptoms of a condition called peripheral neuropathy.

Before you have any medical tests, tell the medical doctor in charge that you are receiving daptomycin. The results of some tests may be affected by daptomycin.

Do not take other medicines unless they have been discussed with your doctor. This especially includes prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicines and herbal or vitamin supplements.

Oxacillin Solution

Pronunciation: OX-a-SIL-in
Generic Name: Oxacillin
Brand Name: Generic only. No brands available.

Oxacillin Solution is used for:

Treating infections caused by certain bacteria.

Oxacillin Solution is a penicillin antibiotic. It works by blocking the growth of the bacteria's cell wall, resulting in the death of the bacteria.

Do NOT use Oxacillin Solution if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Oxacillin Solution or any other penicillin antibiotic (eg, amoxicillin)

  • you are taking a tetracycline antibiotic (eg, doxycycline)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Oxacillin Solution:

Some medical conditions may interact with Oxacillin Solution. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement

  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

  • if you have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, difficulty breathing, dizziness) to a cephalosporin antibiotic (eg, cephalexin) or other beta-lactam antibiotic (eg, imipenem)

  • if you have asthma, kidney problems, bleeding or clotting problems, or abnormal blood electrolyte levels, or if you are dehydrated

  • if you are on a low-salt diet

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Oxacillin Solution. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Tetracyclines (eg, doxycycline ) because they may decrease Oxacillin Solution's effectiveness

  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) because their effectiveness may be decreased or the risk of their side effects may be increased by Oxacillin Solution

  • Heparin or methotrexate because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Oxacillin Solution

  • Aminoglycosides (eg, gentamicin) or oral contraceptives (birth control pills) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Oxacillin Solution

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Oxacillin Solution may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Oxacillin Solution:

Use Oxacillin Solution as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Take Oxacillin Solution by mouth on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating. If stomach upset occurs, take with food to reduce stomach irritation.

  • Shake well before each use.

  • Use a measuring device marked for medicine dosing. Ask your pharmacist for help if you are unsure of how to measure your dose.

  • To clear up your infection completely, take Oxacillin Solution for the full course of treatment. Keep taking it even if you feel better in a few days.

  • If you miss a dose of Oxacillin Solution, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Oxacillin Solution.

Important safety information:

  • Oxacillin Solution only works against bacteria; it does not treat viral infections (eg, the common cold).

  • Be sure to use Oxacillin Solution for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The bacteria could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat in the future.

  • Long-term or repeated use of Oxacillin Solution may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Your medicine may need to be changed to treat this.

  • Mild diarrhea is common with antibiotic use. However, a more serious form of diarrhea, (pseudomembranous colitis) may rarely occur. This may develop while you use the antibiotic or within several months after you stop using it. Contact your doctor right away if stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools occur. Do not treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor.

  • Oxacillin Solution may reduce the number of clot-forming cells (platelets) in your blood. Avoid activities that may cause bruising or injury. Tell your doctor if you have unusual bruising or bleeding. Tell your doctor if you have dark, tarry, or bloody stools.

  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Oxacillin Solution before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.

  • Hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills) may not work as well while you are using Oxacillin Solution. To prevent pregnancy, use an extra form of birth control (eg, condoms).

  • Lab tests, including kidney or liver function tests, complete blood cell counts, or blood electrolyte levels, may be performed while you use Oxacillin Solution. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.

  • Use Oxacillin Solution with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects.

  • Oxacillin Solution should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.

  • Use Oxacillin Solution with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 10 years old who have diarrhea or an infection of the stomach or bowel.

  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Oxacillin Solution while you are pregnant. Oxacillin Solution is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Oxacillin Solution, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Oxacillin Solution:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:
